We talk about preparing for a game this time, but at a bit more of a birds-eye level for most of it:
I definitely want to return to this one with your more specific question about how to prepare for improv/off the cuff stuff. Don has more to say, I'm sure!

Re: Out of Character now a web chat series
I dug this episode. It was a little too jokey at first for such a short cast for my tastes, but some good advice. This coupled with the GM prep discussion on the latest Actual People, Actual Play has gotten me thinking about game prep a good deal.
EDIT: I just re-listened to the episode and the jokey part was less than thirty seconds. Don't know why it felt longer. So, I remove my previous complaint above.
The brushing teeth tip was really weird. I don't get it.

Brushing your teeth helps you articulate your words. You're going to be talking a lot during the game. Seriously - brush for like 30 seconds before the session. Your voice will be clearer, you will be able to do more with your voice, etc. Try it and tell me it doesn't do anything (you're wrong.)
I'll have Erin do her drama voice warmups on mike sometime, that's the next step. "Unique New York. Unique New York."
Gamers talk a lot in roleplaying games, but nobody ever notices that there's a whole bunch of things you can do to take care of and improve your voice that have been developed by other people like singers and actors over the last, say, 20,000 years of human history. I'm not talking necessarily about accents or funny voices or whatnot, but just your ability to make yourself heard and understood, to bring some feeling to your play.

Erin makes a claim about the "creation" of the term gamer that is unsubstantiated. Or rather I don't know of any substantiation for it. "Gamer" was created by game companies to turn a hobby into a passion. Where's the proof?
I don't mean this as a denial of her claim, I just would like to see some proof before I agree.
