 2012: Apocryphic Settings?
So, I have always been interested in Maya history. Although a lot of what 2012 is for the Maya calendar is bunk and sensationalism (of course this makes of good settings ;) ), What would you like to see based on the Mayan truning of the wheel?

I have run two good long running campaigns based on 2012. The first was back in 1988 where i ran a modern AD&D game where an archaeologist discovers a missed interpretation, along with a lost codex that indicate the end is coming in 1989...IF the blood of the sacred pool is not refreshed. A cool adventure that went all over the world and ended up in Central America with the party tried desperately to trick each other to put their hand in the hole. Really, it wont hurt....

Then, the second one was a historical (I shudder to use that term with the Maya) and took place as a group of Olmecs, last of their tribe, made a final bid to keep the sun alive and pass on their knowledge to the Maya. It was fraught with insane laughter, cthulu like gods and a jaunt through the land of the dead.

So, what would you do with a 2012 themed game? Not interested?

I'd like to run a supers game. Make it something similar to Wildcards. Everyone is normal and then they start altering. The first session would be the players having about 1/2 their powers. The second session would be the rest of the powers would manifest.

There would be some evil conspiracy, the government would start rounding up these "mutants" and then fun would be had (at least I hope so).

In the receent Haven podcast, my interview with Mike, he mentions an upcoming Modern game.

Here's the set up:
The players are Law enforcement of some stripe (some local PD, some FBI) andd are part of a new joint task force. They have been called together because someone higher up noticed a strange pattern of serial murders...
That's the hook. The first series of adventures focus on the first serial killer.

What's going on...The World is going through it's final cycle. Each cycle repeats itself in broad terms: Civilization reaches a certain point and then collapses with some great cataclysm. The first cycle saw humans advance way beyond where we are now and unlock the secret of immortality...which was their own undoing, it set off a dormant gene that turns non-immortals into zombie-like monsters, civilization crashes and resets to the stone age. Except the immortals remain.

Through subsequent ages the immortals attempt, through various means, to circumvent the collapse, never quite succeeding. In the aftermath, the immortals "re-seed" civilization (slowly fostering advances in art, technology, and science).

The collapse is coming again. In 2012. The once benevolent group of immortals has been taken over by a psychopathic immortal who wants to speed up the end.

As the date gets closer, civilization will begin to collapse: world-wide economic crises of unprecedented magnitude, acts of violence, wars, genocide, city-wide riots.

Think of it as a slow apocalypse.

I am doing a piss poor job of describing it. :(

Stormrift is set in 2012-2013 and ties in loosely with the Mayan calendar. As the backstory goes, the aliens were able to open portals to Earth every few thousand Earth years (every hundred years or so in the alien dimension). They would travel through the portals, conquer any primitive evolving species (there have been five others before man), and then harvest the Earth's natural resources. The last three-thousand year cycle was interrupted by an alien Civil War so the aliens were not able to return to Earth for six thousand years and this time they found a species (humans) that had evolved far beyond anything they had encountered before--enough to be a threat. The aliens launched their latest invasion of Earth at the end of 2012 and it's hinted that the Mayans had foreknowledge of their coming or at least the opening of the portals.
