@Tsanuri, I agree with what you have to say, but wanted to counter one point.

Tsanuri wrote:
Star Wars (either version) doesn't emulate space opera. It has lots of pics of space opera and has a nice font, but it relies upon the players working within the Genre off their own backs.

I agree that Star Wars d6 (West End Games version) doesn't mechanically support Space Opera per se. However, I feel it gives great support for the swashbuckling style of Star Wars. When I came from D&D 2nd edition, GURPS and Champions to Star Wars d6, I was amazed at the feeling of freedom that the system gives you as a player. Since every skill except capital ship gunnery is defaulted under base stats, you can literally try anything and have a decent shot of being successful. I could play a character who could hop on a speederbike or shoot at TIE Fighters with the guns of a tramp ship with equal skill. That's where I feel Star Wars d6 emulated the "genre" of the Star Wars movies best (we never played jedi, so I cannot speak of Force powers in d6, but they looked wonky).

Post Re: [podcast episode 10] Genre Emulation
Hi guys,

I finally gave this episode a listen, and I have to say I enjoyed it. But I can really see where Orklord was coming from in his comments - the first fifteen minutes of the discussion where you discussed how the font and art can help emulate a genre was pretty pedestrian. But once you got past that I really enjoyed the rest. You discussed several games I'm not especially familiar with and I enjoyed hearing about them. Some of the mechanical techniques they've used to invoke the right mood were really interesting, and got me thinking how I might apply some of these to my own favourite generic system. I thought this was where you hit your stride and when you got to the end of the 45 minutes, I was a bit surprised it was over so soon!

I'd be interested in hearing more about what Ryan did with PDQ# and the Old Republic! Actually, it made me think I'd like to hear something of a 'friendly neighbourhood GM' segment where a GM might talk about something interesting he's run. You'd have to be selective, I think, in doing that, and pick something really different or quirky, but it could work. I thought at first the 'friendly neighbourhood gamer' segments would be boring - but I actually find them fascinating as hell. So maybe something from the GM's perspective might go down equally well.

Cheers!

Thalaba

Here you go: Swashbucklers of the Old Republic

Also, I really want to do some more friendly neighborhood interviews. Unfortunately it's difficult finding interviewees and I'm lazy.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Thanks a lot for the critique Thalaba! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I too am surprised at how interesting it is to hear other gamers talk about their groups and the way they play. It really does take a serious roving reporter to go out and dig those people up, but we'll find them.
