I wish a few threads that don't generate traffic wouldn't discourage you. And I know about that, I collect miscarriages here and everywhere.

Maybe we should try and resurrect threads that never reached their potential.

Or maybe not :p

Nah! I'm just happy as hell that we're getting some response here again. most of that stuff was time critical anyway.

How do you put people on ignore?

Oh, wait. Not only did I find it (make them your foe) but I've already done it in the past. Huh.

I spoke my peace a few times already, in a few different threads.

I don't think 'lightly modded' is enough of an attractor. Some other focus is needed.

Most people don't give a flying fart in the wind about the moderation until something happens they don't like, and when it does, they complain about it alot, but never leave, unless of course they've been banned for something.

Further, making a big deal out of one's low moderation level is a really good way to attract a lot of douchebags who take advantage of it as much as humanly possible.

My point isn't to send people away from here but to show that we're pretty insular. (If you'll pardon the assumption that my habits are a reasonable proxy for the bulk of the posters here and at theRPGsite.) That's something to reckon with.

I'd be curious to know if there is such a thing as wide-spread forum promiscuity. Do regulars at forum X regluarly post at forum Y and Z?

I read & post to theRPGsite and Sett's site regularly. I check in here occasionally. I've been known to poll all three sites when I'm looking for feedback on an idea or research.

I used to read story-games but fortunately I got out of the habit. Nowadays I find myself scanning RPG.net when I'm bored, although I rarely post except to provide facts & pointers to information--I'm not too interested in getting into actual discussion over there. Occasionally I check the BRP central forums, same for K&K Alehouse (an old school D&D forum). Beyond that I probably only look at a given site if a google search points me to it. I did post a "looking for players" thread at Dragonsfoot recently--and it actually got some response from someone local to me, which is nice.

This is more true than not, I think, but forum culture is another factor. Unfortunately, for some reason, general RPG forums are all too easily trolled. Could be fallout from the damage done by RPGnet's moderation. But even in the old days of rec.games.frp.advocacy, people tended to take BS too seriously instead of just rolling their eyes and moving on.

My theory for a long time has been that a certain amount of focus is ultimately necessary; otherwise people just keep rehashing foundational differences. And focus means exclusion. It doesn't necessarily require censorship; it does mean that some people might feel left out. Tough.

The general civility of game-specific fora (even when they have catch-all subfora for all other games, or subfora for specific other games) is my main evidence for this. Interestingly, this focus doesn't necessarily correspond to "story" vs "sandbox" or G-N-S or G-D-S or whatever. Simply fixing the context as a specific game is enough of a basis. Certain games do imply certain styles, yes, but not absolutely.

EDIT: one other thing--I think most forums have too many subforums. Here, I think The Workshop is unnecessary as it currently stands.
